From the "punta del Mascarat" embedded in a bay, Altea has found a nook between the sea and the mountains, providing an almost symbolic image of the Costa Blanca. Altea is the prettiest town on this stretch of the Costa Blanca with its stylish harbour, lively seafront promenade and its beautiful old centre above the glittering Mediterranean below .

With the white and blue dome of its Parochial Church, Nuestra Senora del Consuelo or Virgen de Consuelo with its fantastic looking blue roof the municipality spreads down to the Mediterranean Sea. Small and beautiful coves and beaches extend along a littoral riddled with the same captivating white charm held by the town itself. It's not surprising that this picturesque village of Altea has long been a popular haunt for artists.

On the way up the hill you'll see the occasional small art gallery or craft shop depending on which route you choose then the street heading down from the main square has all kinds of arty shops. In fact, if you're in Altea during the summer period there's an art market in the square every evening. If shopping isn't on the agenda take a seat at Bar Plaza in this same square and enjoy some mellow blues or jazz music which befits this laid back location.

Going down to the seaside you will find the playa de la Roda, the main beach in Altea. It's quite narrow with pebbles which helps explain why Altea has avoided the worst of mass tourism. Down at the seafront in Altea there's no shortage of seafood restaurants serving mainly local rice based dishes such as paella and 'arroz a la banda'. From here there are spectacular views towards El Peñon de Ifach in Calpe to the north and Benidorm's skyscrapers to the south.

One of the few places along the Coast, Altea center still gives you this kind of Spanish village look. The city of Altea feels a little bit divided due to the passing of the national road N-332 which separates Altea a little bit from its beach and harbour area. Altea, along with the church, the most attractive place around Altea is its harbour with many nice restaurants and bars.

The A-7 motorway, exit 64, leads to Altea and the N-332 (Valencia - Alicante) main road crosses the population. It has a railway station on the FGV, Alicante-Dénia line.
